Our next project will take a look at Pop Art and Andy Warhol. You will be creating your own soup cans based on pop culture references that are relevant to you.

After you finish watching this slideshow you will begin brainstorming your soup ideas. Use the worksheets that I provided for this step.
After you finish brainstorming and your ideas are approved by me you can take a look at the second slideshow.
The second slideshow has more in depth instructions that explain how to make your soup cans.
Our next project will take a look at the art of mosaics and stained glass. Mosaics have a long history, starting in Mesopotamia in the 3rd millennium BC. They were typically made from clay tiles, pebbles and sometimes glass. They often depicted religious subjects or were purely decorative. You will be able to choose any photo you would like to create for your mosaic and we will discuss how to use the Google Drawing tools in class. Take a look at the links below for inspiration and some of my examples in the photos.
Notan is a Japanese term which literally means "light dark harmony". Artists use "notan studies" to explore different arrangements of light and dark elements in a painting, without having the distraction of other elements like color, texture and finer details.
Asymmetrical balance (or Asymmetry) means thatthe two halves of the work of art are different, however, try to create balance. In other words, although the sides may not be exactly the same, there will be elements that interact in a way that makes each side equally important.
Contrast is simply defined as difference. Difference between art elements like color, value, size, texture, and so on can intensify the elements used. As a result, the elements used in a work of art can become more powerful. Although contrast is closely related with variety, it is usually considered a principle of art.
Positive space refers to the subject or areas of interest in an artwork, such as a person's face or figure in a portrait, the objects in a still life painting, or the trees in a landscape painting. Negative space is the background or the area that surrounds the subject of the work
DIRECTIONS:
For this project you will be creating 2 digital notans.
You must use shapes that you create from the scribble, polyline, or curve tool. It must be complex and contain overlapping shapes.

We will look at and discuss parodies for our next project. A parody (also called send-up or spoof), is a work created to mock, comment on, or poke fun at an original work, its subject, author, style, or some other target, by means of humorous, satiric or ironic imitation. You will create two parodies of a famous classic artwork for your project this week.

You will be randomly assigned one of these four artists/artworks for your parody:

2. Grant Wood- American Gothic
3. Edvard Munch- The Scream
4. Rene Magritte- The Son of Man
Day 1 Complete Worksheet
Complete the parody worksheet and begin sketching/writing ideas for your parody.
Day 2-6 Complete your Digital Parodies
Your will have four days in class to complete your parodies. Create TWO parodies of your artwork using PIXLR.COM using some of the techniques discussed in class to manipulate the paintings.
This is a digital project that will use the website Photopea. We will be using a few tools in Photopea, mainly the Magic Wand tool and the Filter section, and also learning how to use the layers section in Photopea.
We will also be discussing balance and rhythm in art, while using music as our inspiration to create awesome abstract kaleidoscope images of instruments or other musically inspired images.
This is a beginner project and there will be a live demo in class together, but there is also a video posted below if you need to go back and watch the tutorial again.

This project will take a look at the surrealism art movement and dada art movement. We will look at artist Hannah Hoch for inspiration for our collage. You will create your collages on Photopea and use remove.bg to help you remove backgrounds from images.
For this project we will take a look at artist Victoria Villasana. She uses yarn and fabrics to embellish portraits of vintage photographs."Embellish" means to make something more attractive by adding decorative details or features. We will use Google Drawings to create an embellished portrait in her style. Click on the link to take a look at some of her art examples, then take a look at my example of Adam Sandler. We will discuss how to use the Google drawing tools in class.
For our next project, you will take on the role of a cartographer. Cartography, at its core, is the art and science of creating and using maps to represent the physical world.

The first part of our project will use a website called Inkarnate to create a fantasy map.
There are two free options on Inkarnate to create a map. You can use either choice to create your map. We will learn about and add a fantasy compass rose to this map in Photopea on Day 3.
Today we will add a compass rose to your digital map.
Your compass rose must include
1. A fantasy creature/object
2. Compass
3. Scroll with your world name
You will need to find these images online and use remove.bg or photopea to remove the background images.
You will open your map in photopea and add your compass rose to the map by using
File>Open and Place to place your items
and
Edit>Free Transform to resize and move your images
DAY 4-9 Hand-Drawn Map
On day 4 we will begin practicing drawing different landmasses and transitioning into the hand drawn map portion of the project by building your world, let's look at this skillshare and talk a little about building your fantasy world.
After that you will be able to begin your map drawing. We will use micron pens to outline your artwork. After you finish your drawing, we will age your paper by painting a brown watercolor wash over your map. You may also tear and wrinkle your map along the edges to create even more of an old map feel.

Your second task will be to find an item in the real world that looks like a face and take a photo of it. Then you will use what you learned creating your emoji smiley to create a unique character from your item.
Take a look at the video for some examples of this. This is a phenomenon called pareidolia and everyone experiences it.

Definition: Simply stated, juxtaposition means placing things side-by-side. In art this usually is done with the intention of bringing out a specific quality or creating an effect, particularly when two contrasting or opposing elements are used. The viewer's attention is drawn to the similarities or differences between the elements.
While juxtaposition can be used in terms of formal elements - for example, the use of aggressive mark-making in contrast to an area of very controlled shading, or an area of crisp detail against something softly handled, it more often refers to concepts or imagery.
An artist might juxtapose a machine-made object or urban environment against organic elements of nature, in order to highlight different qualities in the two. Note that the way this is done can dramatically change the meaning: we might regard the machine-made or human-created as representing safety and order against the uncontrollable strength of nature; or we might see the fragility and beauty of nature against the soul-less uniformity of the urban world, depending on the nature of the subjects or images and the way they are presented.
