8th Grade- Color Theory Soda Cans

During this lesson, we will take a look at graphic design, basic color theory and different color schemes used in art.

After completing a color theory worksheet you will create four unique soda can designs. Each can must include a different color scheme,different logo, design, and original name.  We will also take a look at the graphic design process and discuss logos in society.

For now take a look at the websites below to get some inspiration and instruction in color theory and graphic design.

Day 1- Color Theory Intro

Compelete the worksheet on color theory.

Day 2-4 Soda Can Logo Designs

After looking at the color theory information and completing the worksheet, you will begin creating logos for your soda cans. Before you begin that here are a few examples of logos and a LINK to a website about logo evolution for you to look at.

As you create your logos for your soda cans, keep in mind that artists try and incorporate an image and text into one, easy to read, interesting design.  Here is one more LINK to an article showing 50 different logos that contain a hidden meaning.

Each can must use a different color scheme.

Label each can with the appropriate color scheme.

8th Grade- Creative Color Wheel

Color Theory (Use this link to answer your Worksheet)

IMPORTANT PROJECT INFO

This is a color theory project so you must include some color theory in your piece. 

Your work will need to incorporate 4 specific items in your piece:  

1. Color Wheel

2. Value Scale (Created by adding tints or shades to a hue)

3. Primary or Secondary Triad

4. One set of complementary colors

You may choose how to incorporate these 4 items in any way you like.

DAY 1/2- Worksheet/Brainstorm

Today, you will complete a worksheet on color theory, using the link above, and to work on design ideas for your piece. You should have an idea ready by the beginning of class tomorrow showing how your are going to incorporate the 4 items required.

DAY 3-6 Complete Project

After completing your sketch on day 1, begin working on your final piece. Your final must be done on a piece of 12"x18" drawing paper that I will give you. 

6th- Paul Klee and Complementary Colors

Our next project takes a look at complementary colors, watercolor painting, and artist Paul Klee. 

Paul Klee was a prolific Swiss and German artist best known for his large body of work, influenced by cubism, expressionism and surrealism.

COMPLEMENTARY COLORS 

ANY COLORS THAT ARE DIRECTLY ACROSS FROM EACH OTHER

You will choose one of these three color combinations for your piece.

Artists will create a watercolor painting using a complementary color scheme on book pages, to help as a guide for perpendicular lines.

8th- Artists Reveal Nature/Unit 7

This unit looks at the way artists have been inspired by nature subjects and natural materials. Students will study how artists use color in their artworks. Students will consider how the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists used color in both natural ad expressive ways. We will also take a look at Japanese zen gardens.

2. Complete the Weather or Not? Worksheet and the Check Your Understanding Worksheet
3. Write the definition of vocabulary words (use an art definition.)

DAY 3-4

2. Complete the 7.2 Check Your Understanding Worksheet and the Color Finder Cards Worksheet and the Going for the Green Worksheet.

DAY 5-6

2. Complete Impressionist/Post Impressionist WS and Check Your Understanding WS

Art Project

1. Students will draw a zen garden and color it using a color scheme from the worksheets.

2. Students will write one paragraph about their research on zen gardens and one paragraph on the symbolism behind their zen garden.
3. Students will glue their zen garden piece and their informative essay to a black piece of construction paper.

7th Grade- Color Theory/ Value

This is a project dealing with two elements, color and value. We will discuss both of these as we work through creating your abstract pieces, both traditionally and digitally.

Day 1,2 - Value and Color Theory Worksheet

After watching the videos above, complete the worksheet. You will use a pencil to fill in your worksheet.

Day 3-5 Traditional Painting

During the next few days you will create your artworks. You have a few choices with this project so you can decide the design you would like to create. Here are some examples below. 

All 3 projects share something similar, they are all monochromatic pieces. You may choose what type of painting and what color you will use. 

Your piece must be a monochromatic piece and must contain at least 5 value steps.

This video discusses tints and shades, and will also show you how to mix color to create different values.

Day 5-6  Digital Painting

Students will be using Pixlr to create their digital paintings.

Day 7 Compare/ Contrast Essay

Fill out the venn diagram and then write a 3 paragraph compare and contrast essay.
