8th Grade- Color Theory Soda Cans

During this lesson, we will take a look at graphic design, basic color theory and different color schemes used in art.

After completing a color theory worksheet you will create four unique soda can designs. Each can must include a different color scheme,different logo, design, and original name.  We will also take a look at the graphic design process and discuss logos in society.

For now take a look at the websites below to get some inspiration and instruction in color theory and graphic design.

Day 1- Color Theory Intro

Compelete the worksheet on color theory.

Day 2-4 Soda Can Logo Designs

After looking at the color theory information and completing the worksheet, you will begin creating logos for your soda cans. Before you begin that here are a few examples of logos and a LINK to a website about logo evolution for you to look at.

As you create your logos for your soda cans, keep in mind that artists try and incorporate an image and text into one, easy to read, interesting design.  Here is one more LINK to an article showing 50 different logos that contain a hidden meaning.

Each can must contain a different name and logo design.

Each can must use a different color scheme.

Label each can with the appropriate color scheme.

8th Grade- Creative Color Wheel

Color Theory (Use this link to answer your Worksheet)

IMPORTANT PROJECT INFO

This is a color theory project so you must include some color theory in your piece. 

Your work will need to incorporate 4 specific items in your piece:  

1. Color Wheel

2. Value Scale (Created by adding tints or shades to a hue)

3. Primary or Secondary Triad

4. One set of complementary colors

You may choose how to incorporate these 4 items in any way you like.

DAY 1/2- Worksheet/Brainstorm

Today, you will complete a worksheet on color theory, using the link above, and to work on design ideas for your piece. You should have an idea ready by the beginning of class tomorrow showing how your are going to incorporate the 4 items required.

DAY 3-6 Complete Project

After completing your sketch on day 1, begin working on your final piece. Your final must be done on a piece of 12"x18" drawing paper that I will give you. 

7th Grade- Color Wheel

For this project you will be creating a color wheel using paint and using ONLY the primary colors. The primary colors are RED, BLUE, and YELLOW.

....and here is a normal color wheel. Notice that even though they are very different, they do share some similarities.

Day 1- Brainstorm 

Following the steps listed on the website above, we will BRAINSTORM today.

You will need to trace a slice of your circle three times on a plain sheet of paper. 

Create three different design ideas in each of the three sections. 

Think about how you can change the shape of the triangle to create something unique.

Day 2-7 Color Wheel

After discussing which design to use, you will begin making your circle.

Using the transfer technique discussed in class, transfer your image 12 times so you have 12 copies. These will be used for each section of the color wheel.

Paint each of your images a different color from the color wheel using only red, blue, and yellow. Follow the video below to help you complete your painting.

After you have painted all twelve pieces, you will place them on a black piece of paper in a circular pattern or in a line, in the correct order.
