7th- Abstract Watercolor Artworks

For this project, we will explore watercolor techniques and create two abstract artworks.
We will also take a look at artist, Brandon Boyd, for inspiration for on of the artworks.

Explore

We will practice some watercolor techniques and create an artwork from our exploration today.
We will practice 5 techniques: wet on dry, wet on wet, dry brush, salt resist, and Saran Wrap.

As you explore these techniques, incorporate lines and shapes and colors to create unity, rhythm, and repetition in your artwork.
After painting, use a fine tip sharpie to outline shapes to create emphasis and detail.

Exploding Books

For our first artwork, we will create an explosion book out of your abstract exploration from the first day. We will watch the video and work together to create the book. You will choose your cover design and the placement of your pieces into the book.

Wet on Wet Abstract Artwork

Our final artwork uses the wet on wet technique to create interesting shapes and colors and uses paint pens to add lines and patterns to an abstract painting, inspired by artist Brandon Boyd. Boyd is the lead singer of the band Incubus, and is a published author and celebrated visual artist. We will take a look at his “Remnants” series for our inspiration.

Using the wet on wet technique, create spaces of color and shape on your paper. Let the colors blend and flow on their own. After the paint has dried, use paint pens and/or black sharpies to create interesting lines and patterns across the painted areas.
